Two Day Media Forum at Instituto Cervantes

The best thing being a student is having large time spending time to collect knowledge and facts about anything around the world. As a student, you have the access to discover and rediscover things and ideas. This week, along with my classmates we’ve been to Instituto Cervantes to attend a two day forum about Spanish-Philippine Media.Attended by different Media People including CNN Spain, El Mundo and NUJP. Our professor gave our group a midterm project to discuss Philippine Media in Spanish era. Everybody knows that during the regime of Spanish here in the Philippines, we do not have the full access on our media. Even books and articles published are being controlled by the Spanish authority. But there things left behind that we didn’t know. There are Filipino students who are studying media relation courses as early as those days. These students came from prestigious family or clan that they can afford to study in big universities in and out of the country. The oldest university that offers media courses is University of Sto. Tomas.

Today, Spanish and Philippine media – if we will compare, doesn’t have any difference. Only that Philippine Media is corrupted by political anxieties and minds. In the height of Maguindanao Massacre were numbers of media practitioners were killed by known political clan, Spanish media people asked – why are these happening to our country?

In Spanish Media, practitioners are protected by a certain guild and don’t give a link to political propaganda. But in the Philippines, media is used to promote or uplift some certain political names. Many to mention, but are these characteristics am I going to posses? Am I ready to enter this world, having my foot step into the grave? Everybody talks about to be a responsible media practitioners, but doesn’t know how to be a responsible person. As a kid learning the ins and outs of this industry, I will never give a risk to offer myself for any political stability against a person or a community.
